In case you’re wondering, Facebook owns both Instagram and WhatsApp, having acquired both of them from their respective founders over the past decade. Facebook is yet to comment on this publicly.
That, however, will very likely change in the coming days with Facebook flipping on a server-side switch to implement the change. Once updated, the Direct Messaging logo at the top-right corner on Instagram is replaced by the Messenger logo. In early 2018, Facebook allows AI applications and messenger bots to access the app to interact with users. Users can load games they already have installed and the browser works.

The update is apparently available on both Android and iOS. along with Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Oculus VR - The Verge. Why it matters: This is the latest move in Facebook's broader initiative to fuse individual apps and products, paving the way for users to be able to communicate cross-platform. The message also lists a bunch of other features, including a “new colorful look for your chats”, more emoji reactions and swipe-to-reply. Facebook is starting to merge the messaging infrastructure of its apps WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Instagram, the Verge reports. The biggest new feature addition in the new update is the ability to “chat with friends who use Facebook”. Apparently, an incoming Instagram update is promising select users “a new way to message on Instagram”. According to The Verge, the company is testing a version of the platform that would replace this option with a notification icon.
